Metro City police arrested a 28-year-old man Thursday after he allegedly attempted to rob First National Bank using only his hand shaped like a gun and a paper bag with a poorly drawn frowny face.
Kyle Pemberton of Riverside District walked into the downtown branch at approximately 2:15 PM, pointed his finger at teller Margaret Wu, and announced, "This is a stick-up. Give me all the money or I'll... you know." He then made a "pew pew" sound with his mouth.
Security footage shows Wu staring at Pemberton for approximately 14 seconds before pressing the silent alarm. Pemberton, apparently unaware of her response, continued his demands while livestreaming the incident to his social media followers.
"The system is the real robbery. I'm just holding up a mirror to capitalist society. This finger gun represents the violence inherent in— ma'am? Ma'am, are you listening? This is important social commentary."

Wu reportedly responded, "Sir, this is a bank."
Eight Minutes of Waiting
Pemberton allegedly waited at the teller window for nearly eight minutes, periodically reminding Wu that he had a "gun" and occasionally refreshing his livestream to check viewer count. He was apprehended without incident when police arrived, having made no attempt to flee.
"He seemed genuinely confused about why we were arresting him," said Officer Diana Cortez. "He kept saying it wasn't a real robbery because he didn't have a real weapon. We explained that's not how robbery works."
At the time of arrest, Pemberton's livestream had 47 viewers, 43 of whom were bots. Comments included "lol what," "is this satire," and several cryptocurrency scam links.
Legal Defense
Pemberton has been charged with attempted robbery, disturbing the peace, and unlicensed live-streaming in a commercial establishment. He faces up to seven years in prison, though his public defender is arguing for a mental health evaluation.
"My client is not a criminal — he's a performance artist," said defense attorney Marcus Webb. "The finger gun was clearly a metaphor for the predatory practices of the banking industry. If anything, First National should be thanking him for the publicity."
First National has not commented on whether they plan to thank him.
A Pattern of Behavior
This marks Pemberton's third arrest this year. Previous incidents include attempting to shoplift a television by "purchasing it with the energy of gratitude" and occupying a coffee shop for 11 hours after ordering a single water.
His trial is scheduled for May 3rd. He plans to represent himself, pending a decision on whether interpretive dance constitutes a valid legal defense.
